Welcome to Trail Shoes Reviewed. Today we’re diving into a shoe I’ve really enjoyed testing: the Kailas Fuga EX Pro.
This is Kailas’ top-tier trail racing shoe, built for technical terrain and longer distances. It’s light, it’s fast, and it’s surprisingly comfortable underfoot—making it a serious option for both competitive runners and trail enthusiasts looking for a high-performance shoe.
Let’s start with the grip
The outsole is built with Vibram Litebase Megagrip, and it performs exceptionally well on wet rock and technical ground. The layout features washboard-style lugs, with 4 mm lugs on the inside and 6 mm lugs on the outside, which gives it great traction during sharp turns and steep descents.
Where it might feel slightly out of its depth is in deep, muddy trails. Those shorter 4 mm lugs can clog up a little faster. But on most other terrain—especially dry, rocky, or root-covered surfaces—this shoe excels.
Cushioning and responsiveness
Kailas have used a supercritical EVA foam in the midsole. It’s soft and bouncy, but not unstable. That’s because they’ve also added a carbon plate, which offers torsional stability without making the shoe overly stiff. You still get flexibility in the forefoot, but the plate adds structure and helps you stay centred, even on uneven terrain.
The platform under the midfoot is relatively narrow, which adds to the nimble feel, and the shoe comes in at just 275g for a men’s EU 42, which is impressively light given its performance.
Stability and support
Even though it’s a racing shoe, the Fuga EX Pro does offer subtle stability features. You’ll find sidewalls on both the medial and lateral sides of the heel, plus a mildly stiff heel counter, which together help reduce excess pronation. The overall geometry is quite aggressive, with a good heel bevel and forefoot rocker—ideal for both flat cruising and technical descents.

Upper design and fit
At the front, there’s a rubber bumper for light protection—though it won’t save your toes from a sharp kick into a rock. The upper is very breathable, which helps it dry out fast if it gets wet.
One of the standout features is the dual-zone lacing system. You can tighten the forefoot and ankle separately, which is ideal for a secure lockdown—especially useful on steep downhills where you don’t want your foot sliding forward.
If you’ve got forefoot issues like Morton’s neuroma, you can ease off the lower lacing to avoid compression, which is a thoughtful touch. That said, it’s a tapered fit in the forefoot, so those with wider feet might feel a bit cramped. It’s a classic racing fit—snug, agile, and precise—but not roomy.
You’ve also got a gusseted tongue to keep out debris and padding around the heel cup, which locks the rearfoot in nicely without causing irritation.
Who is the Kailas Fuga EX Pro for?
This is a versatile trail racing shoe that can handle technical terrain, moderate to steep descents, and long-distance events. It’s a great match for runners who want:
- A lightweight and responsive shoe
- Excellent traction on rock and dry ground
- A flexible carbon plate for propulsion without stiffness
- A secure, locked-in fit for precision on technical trails
The only real limitation is mud—this isn’t a deep-lugged shoe. But for alpine trails, dry technical ground, and fast ultra-distance racing, it’s a top performer.
